Creation of Spanish special characters on PC and MAC:

The Spanish language contains some special characters you won´t find on others than Spanish keyboards. However, you will need these special characters to answer our exercises correctly. The following table contains the shortcuts you need:

Windows-PC:

Character Combination Description
Á Alt + 181 Latin capital letter A with acute
á Alt + 160 Latin small letter a with acute
É Alt + 144 Latin capital letter E with acute
é Alt + 130 Latin small letter e with acute
Í Alt + 214 Latin capital letter I with acute
í Alt + 161 Latin small letter i with acute
Ñ Alt + 165 Latin capital letter N with tilde
ñ Alt + 164 Latin small letter n with tilde
Ó Alt + 224 Latin capital letter O with acute
ó Alt + 162 Latin small letter o with acute
Ú Alt + 233 Latin capital letter U with acute
ú Alt + 163 Latin small letter u with acute
Ü Alt + 154 Latin capital letter U with diaeresis
ü Alt + 129 Latin small letter u with diaeresis
¿ Alt + 168 inverted question mark (e.g. ¿Qué pasa?)
¡ Alt + 173 inverted exclamation point (e.g. ¡Qué bueno!)
ª Alt + 0170 feminine ordinal indicator (e.g. la primera = 1ª)
º Alt + 0186 masculine ordinal indicator (e.g. el primero = 1º)

Note: It is important to keep the Alt key pressed until you have entered the number code.

For example to obtain the letter ñ:

  1. press Alt
  2. type 164
  3. release the Alt key

mac-OS:

For e.g. the letter á:

  1. press key a to open the submenu with all available accents. Note: The submenu will only appear if there are accent options to a letter.
  2. chose á from the list.
